NEW ARTBOOKS:

Derek Yaniger's new book Wildsville is a true visual feast for anyone that appreciates the 1950s UPA style. Solid drawing and design sense, along with great humour makes this book a must. Many artists try and draw in the retro style - Derek succeeds.

Sorcelleries (witches) by Guarnido is a real treat for Blacksad fans. If you're like me and wondered what his characters would look like if they weren't animals - here it is. Terrific and super appealing designs. Classic Disney style (note: Guarnido worked for Disney in Europe). No english edition is expected -but the designs are so nice, treat it like an artbook and add it to your collection. That's what I am doing.
Madagascar was far from one of my favourite animated movies, but I have to give it kuddos for a truly fun and interesting design style. It was the first 3D animated movie to use a successful graphic style in its design. This new book featuring art from the upcoming 2nd movie has tons of great drawings that highlight the cool style. Again, if you're a style reference junkie like me - you will want this book in your library.

CANADIAN DOLLAR TUMBLES = BIG SAVINGS RIGHT NOW

If you haven't been paying attention to the news in the past week, you might be surprised to learn that it costs around $1.25 to buy 1 U.S. dollar right now (or 79 cents US = 1 Canadian $). That's a huge reversal of what it was 6 monhts ago when the dollar was practically at parity.

For the moment we are holding the price on Graphic Novels and Manga at US Cover -but it's unclear exactly how long we'll be able to do that. So take advantage now - The savings may not be this good for some time, if the dollar continues on its path or even stays at these new old-time lows.

Our US pricing and low canadian dollar means Big Savings Right Now - but again, how long we can keep this up, we don't know.

The reason for the low dollar? Simply put, the Canadian economy and dollar value is affected heavily by commodity prices (things like oil,gold,etc.) and with Oil having dropped nearly 50% from its high last year and gold and silver down, plus add the fact that interest rates dropped again means that the Canadian dollar is/has lost ground. They say that the lower dollar will help exporters (Canadian manufacturers) but for us in the book business, it means books are becoming more expensive. Here's just one article on the subject:

Here are some of the highlights of books arriving next week. A full list, including more images will be posted shortly.

First off is Heavy Liquid by Paul Pope. Fully re-coloured this long out of print masterpiece is finally going to be here.

Sky Doll collected hard cover from Marvel. Collects the 3 issue mini-series into one handsome volume. in English.

Frank Miller Elektra Omnibus. If you already have the Daredevil omnibus, or even if you don't - Elektra is one of Miller's coolest creations and now she comes in a deluxe omnibus of her own.

Y the last Man Deluxe Hardcover volume 1. For those fans that love the series so much, they want it in a hardcover - here it is with an all new cover. Possibly one of the best series of all time, well worth reading if you haven't already.

Haruhi Suzumiya volume 1. The cult favourite anime is now available in an english manga. Just in time for Halloween. A funny book with a great concept.

DISNEY'S DOGS ART BOOK

Just arrived. Disney's Dogs features a ton of great sketches and illustrations of dog designs from Disney past, present and future (Bolt). A great reference book for anyone interested in character design or for anyone that loves man's best friend.

Coming Wednesday Oct 15

First off: Dear Dracula. A cool new graphic novel in a kids book like format. As a kid, I couldn't get enough of Dracula. In fact I dressed up as the blood sucker for 3 halloweens running. A soft spot for him remains, and I am truly excited by this new release. I got to see a few pages at Comic-Con last July and the art is quite nice. Perfect for anyone that loves vampires.

Svetlanas awesome Dramacon series gets the 'Ultimate' Treatment in this oversized collection. Also out this week is the new Yen plus magazine featuring Svetlana's new series. Check them both out this coming week.

From the creator of Exit Wounds (named one of the best graphic novels of 2007 by Entertainment Weekly magazine) comes a new book by Rutu Modan.

Street Fighter is back with a new series. This time its Turbo. volume 1 of the comic comes with 2 covers. Heres one by Alvin Lee.

NEW MANGA SYSTEM

Ok -so anyone that's been to the store since Sunday already knows this, but the Labyrinth now displays its wall of manga in a new way. We now have 3 sections instead of 7.

the big change has to do with books in the old sections we labelled as:

action
action comedy
comedy
fantasy
horror

Now - all of these sections have been rolled up into one alphabetical section with manga from all these categories. Can We call it the Shonen section? would that be wrong? If anyone can suggest a way to describe this section using a single word that would be cool.

Still seperate, as per customer feedback is the Shojo Section and the Yaoi Sections.

Overall I am thrilled with the change. Addmitedly though, after using the old system for so long - it feels a bit strange looking for books, now that they are moved over. Still, long term the new simplified system will save us time in racking books and save you time in finding books.

Another change that manga fans may have noticed is all the little boxes. Yes -they aren't much to look at now, but we will be sprucing them up in the coming weeks. Adding colour and tags. The goal of the boxes is to help us adjust to the ever growing selection without having to get rid of titles, and isn't that what life is all about?!

Fyi: Each box will have a unique title or series and the latest issue for all ongoing series will always be at the front.

Finally got some new French Books in. These include Sketchbooks, BD (new titles never before seen) and truly unique artbooks. Sorry no images just yet - if you're curiosity is peaked, please stop by the store.

Plus: Got a bunch of Tatoo Tribal Magazines from Japan-for those who aren't familiar with this magazine - its more like a Mook (magazine-book). Its full of awesome examples of Tattooed folk and drawings. Whether you're considering getting a tatoo or are simply a person that loves the art form, you will love these mooks!

NEW HI FRUCTOSE, STREET FIGHTER AND MORE .. this Wednesday!

This Wednesday promises to be another one of those big Manga ship weeks. Check out the full list at the bottom for all the titles. Having said that, there are a few great art items too this week including the long awaited STREET FIGHTER Tribute book, High-Fructose #9, Transformers artbook soft cover, and Ian McCaig's Shadowline artbook.

First off Hi Fructose = High Quality. If you love counter culture art, this is the best magazine out there. It's the newby on the block, that's giving Juxtapoz a run for its money. Every issue is worthwhile and while its practically a Mook (Magazine Book) its very inexpensive.
Street Fighter Tribute book had its softcover debut in toronto last weekend. Its hardcover debut happened a few months back at San Diego Comic Con. Had a look at it then ($80 hardcover, $40 softcover) - it's gorgeous. Udon has assembeled some great talent to create some exceptional art.

Ian McCaig is a big name in concept art and his book Shadowline is expected to deliver big time. Delayed several times, its finally coming home this Wednesday.

Possibly the most prolific artist on the planet - Ashely Wood's Sparrow #00 is finally available outside the boxed set.


This week, 2 new Twilight Zone graphic novels are coming out. A huge fan, for a long time, I can't wait for these.


Hellboy Library 2 picks up where 1 left off. Reprints 2 great tales in a deluxe hardcover format plus tons of cool sketches to boot.!

I Luv- I Luv Halloween, and this is the deluxe oversized hardcover edition in full colour. Brilliant book, and well worth the deluxe treatment.

Iron Fist has been one of the best new series of the past year or so, and this week a new collection is out with Immoratal Iron Fist #3.

IDW has proven they can do transformers. Their Art book is also proof they can do artbooks well. This is a softcover edition of the previously released hardcover. At half the price, there's no excuse not to jump on it, if you're a fan who doesn't already own the Hard Cover.

Two Tribal Tattoo items this week from Japan. First off, there's a new issue of the magazine and then there's this cool artbook. If past issues are any indication, expect great photos and high production values.
