BRUCE CAMPBELL IS BRUCE CAMPBELL

So it's no secret but I am a huge Bruce Campbell Fan. His new film ' My name is Bruce' is coming shortly and I hope it's Bad. I mean good -bad. You know, so bad it's good. Yes -that's the kind of Bruce Campbell movies I love most.

Even with all my love for B.C., I have never thought to look at his website. Yes he has one.
here it is:
http://www.bruce-campbell.com/

If you go to it, be sure NOT to skip the intro. Yeah, yeah - I usually skip ALL intros -but this is Bruce Campbell we're talking about. He has a cheesy emotional photo montage happening with a danny elfman/conan-sounding soundtrack to it. After you look at the whole intro, you may enter the site. Not before.

Oh -and here's the trailer for his new film:

On his site, he talks about doing a tour to promote the film. After examining the list, it became clear Toronto is not one of the stops. I am going to go back and watch the intro to his site again...

PURE ALPHABET? OR CATEGORIZE? THAT IS THE QUESTION

Customers of the Labyrinth on Bloor Street in Toronto's Annex district already know that unlike most other stores, our manga is organized alphabetically by category. The original thinking was that a person could find like items next to each other without having to search the entire manga wall of thousands of books. This means Action is with Action, Horror with Horror, Fantasy with Fantasy, Shojo with Shojo and Yaoi with Yaoi.

This also means that titles like Yu-Gi-Oh (action) that younger fans enjoy, are not directly next to titles like Yellow (Yaoi).

We are revisiting this idea however, after a new customer showed some frustration with trying to learn our system. The argument is that some titles can fall into multiple categories -so where should one look? (I get his point, as this was always something that bothered me at Blockbuster when I was searching out old movies.) Traditionally we solved this problem with customer service. You don't know where something is, you ask us, we find it for you. Next time you come by, you know where to look.

Still - we are thinking about going Purely Alphabetical. We would love your input. You can leave comments here or tell us what you think in person when you stop by the store.

CHRIS SANDERS AND DEAN YEAGLE TOGETHER AT LAST

NOW IN STOCK:

Chris Sanders' Kiskaloo book is back in stock. Good things are worth waiting for, but now that its here - no more waiting. yay!

Sitting on our shelves, right next to Kiskaloo is Dean Yeagle's Mandy Portrait Gallery featuring plenty of talented artists doing their renditions of Mandy. All copies come signed by Dean -which is in fact the reason the book is so late in coming to the store in the first place.

Here are a couple of picks we snagged from www.imaginismstudios.com by two of our favourites: Bob and Kei. Yes -they contributed to the new Mandy Portrait Gallery. Check out the other 30 something artists images in the book itself when you stop by. We would love to see you.

Mandy and Skoots by Bob Chiu.

Mandy and Skoots by Kei Acedera.

ANATOMY SCULPTURES

2 FOOT TALL ANATOMY SCULPTURES - it's like Body Worlds on your Desk!

Student version:

Artist Version:

Colour Version:

With summer over, and everyone back at school we thought we should mention the awesome Anatomy sculptures we carry. These completely accurate figures are 24" tall and show both superficial and interior muscles. We've heard that during the sculpting process -the artist showed these to 6 surgeons to check for accuracy. The proof is in the pudding however, and we can tell you that some of our pickiest customers (life drawing teachers) love these figures.

They are the best way to learn anatomy. The Labyrinth is a bookstore, so you know we love books -but in this case - anatomy books often try and explain a 3-d concept like the human body - with flat pictures. Thats why we believe having this figure is a superior way to go. Every angle is covered - so no matter what perspective you are drawing, you can see exactly what muscles go where. insertions and all.

There are 3 levels of figures. The first is the student version and comes with removable arms.

The 2nd version is the grey artist edition (to look like the clay that the figure was sculpted in) and besides having removable arms, also has a removable head, genitals and a rotating base.

The colour version is identical to the artist (grey)version -except its in colour.

All 3 come with chart showing every muscle on the figure (with names) for easy study.

These figures aren't inexpensive, but compared to the cost of art school these days -they are less than 1% what you're paying for school and they can come in super handy. The way we like to think of it is - if you were to skip 1 or 2 classes in an animation or illustration course - the cost of those classes would have paid for the figure.

Now we really believe these figures will help you out, if you're doing life drawing or have any interest in anatomy. First year students, or art fundamental students will have find these the most valuable item because by the time they finish school they will have been able to use these figures for upto 4 years and really make them pay off. Then, once school is done, they can be sold off to freshmens. Honestly though, after seeing how much help they are, we think you'll never want to let them go.

HENRY YAN IS WORKING ON A NEW BOOK

Henry Yan's figure drawing books is one of our favourite books here at the Labyrinth. Henry is a life drawing teacher working out of San Francisco. If you don't already own a copy of his awesome book, do yourself a favour and look into it.

The reason for this post is that we just learned from Henry that he has finally started working on a book of his paintings. According to Henry 'the writing part is going a little bit slow'. Still, we are totally excited to hear that he actually is working on it. His last book was a serious drain, as he worked and slaved on it, in the little free time that he had after working as a teacher. So the new book, probably won't be out very soon -but we are already eagerly anicipating it. No worries for customers of the store though, the day its done - we will have copies and blog readers will be the first to hear about it.
