Chitrakatha - A documentary about Indian Comic Books!

Comics are created by people all over the world. I grew up reading many in India, and it looks like someone is making a documentary about India's comic book culture! You can visit their website below, but it'll still be awhile until it is completed, and hopefully subtitled. But anyone interested should definately check it out!

The documentary is called 'Chitrakatha' which means 'Comics' in India's national language, Hindi (Chitra = Pictures, Katha = Story). They also have a Facebook page as well.

Behind The Art Of 'Last Window'

Here's a cool look at how the animation in DS games such as 'Hotel Dusk: Room 215' and 'Last Window: The Secret of Cape West' was accomplished through the use of rotoscoping. Sadly, the game developer Cing is no longer around and it is unlikely that 'Last Window' will be released outside of Japan due to low demand. But enjoy this cool glimpse into the development process that utilized footage of real actors and rotoscoped them into animated characters using a Wacom Cintiq. The effect is rather nice!

Silent Hill: Revelation currently filming in Toronto!

The sequel to the Silent Hill movie is now filming around Toronto and will also carry on in Galt. The new film which is a direct sequel to the first film is also an adaptation of the game 'Silent Hill 3.' A new director is on board, Michael J. Bassett, and stars Adelaide Clemens, whom some might remember from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. She plays Heather Mason. Sean Bean, who played Christopher DaSilva in the first film is returning as Harry Mason. Fans who've played the game will see the connection. Radha Mitchell who played Rose DaSilva in the first film will also be returning, as will Deborah Kara Unger as Dahlia. Another new members has been cast by the name of Kit Harrington whom many believe will portray the character Vincent.

The film's production also sees the return of Patrick Tatoupolos, who was the creature designer in the first film that brought to life the game's monsters including the famous Pyramid Head. The production is also trying to get the game's original composer Akira Yamaoka on board to compose some new music. The film began principal photography in Toronto a little more than a week ago. Plans are in place to move to Galt to shoot outdoor scenes. The film is being shot natively in stereoscopic 3-D.

While fans recognize the many departures the first film made, the new director hopes to bring the film universe more in line with the games, though for good or ill, the films and games will always have their differences. Let's hope for the best!

As a reminder, any fans looking for Silent Hill comics ought to drop by our store to get them at U.S. Cover price!

Sailor Moon manga is returning!

"It’s the title that broke manga in the US — no comic has had a bigger influence than SAILOR MOON, the manga/anime that kicked off the shojo manga boom, made it safe for girls to read comics and introduced the idea of cosplay to America in a big way.

Created by Naoko Takeuchi, and published as part of their MIXX magazine, Sailor Moon also put Tokyopop on the map in the late 90s. However the title has long been out of print in English, despite cries that it would find a ready audience.

At long last, Sailor Moon is coming back, this time from Kodansha, with a deluxe edition of the origianl 18 volumes in 12 books, and a first-ever US version of CODENAME: SAILOR V, the prequel."

Welcome to the Space Show

Here's a nice half-hour long preview of the adorable and wonderfully animated film 'Welcome to the Space Show'!

"With an intergalactic cast of thousands, Kojo Masunari’s colorfully explosive debut feature sets a new high for visual spectacle and sheer inventiveness of character design – in what has to be one of the most gleefully surreal depictions of alien life forms ever portrayed in cinema.

It seems like just another lazy summer is in store for Amane and her older cousin Natsuki. Lolling about the Japanese countryside, the days are blithe and boundless. But boredom quickly vanishes when they find an injured dog in the woods and bring him back to the cabin – only to discover that he is not a dog at all, but Pochi, an alien botanist sent to Earth to track down a rare and powerful plant called Zughaan (better known to Earthlings as wasabi root). Before long, Pochi has whisked the kids away to a space colony on the dark side of the moon, an interstellar melting pot where we experience a non-stop parade of humorous alien creatures, jellyfish spaceships, dragon trains, and – if that weren’t enough – a theme song from UK pop anomaly Susan Boyle. (Really? Yes, really.) The plot twists come fast and furious, and with such a glorious barrage of color and invention washing across the screen, you just want to hit pause and gawk at the wonder of what you are seeing."

Disaster Relief for Japan

No doubt many of you are seeing and hearing about the devastating effects of the recent earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan a few days back. It is perhaps the worst natural disaster to ever happen to the island nation. To keep up with current news I recommend following it through the BBC.

As you might expect, there will be delays of manga, anime, games and event cancellations etc. coming out in Japan due to the current situation. Even game servers that run online games such as Metal Gear Online have been shut down. This is all part of an effort to conserve electricity due to the destability of their infrastructure and shutting down of nuclear power plants for safety. So hopefully everyone will be understanding and considerate due to what is taking place.

As a reference of interest, the campaign to conserve electricity is named 'Operation Yashima' after a famous episode from the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion where the entire nation of Japan went on a total blackout in order to divert electrical energy to a positron sniper rifle used by Eva Unit-01 to defeat an alien threath. You can read more about it here. Of other interest is that anime composer Yokko Kanno, has composed a new song to support the Quake victims. You can hear and learn about it here.

Please offer your prayers for the people of Japan and if you are able, please donate money as well. Be careful to whom you donate money to as there are people out there who will take advantage of this tragedy to scam you. For a list of reputable organizations, ANN has a list here. I'd recommend the Red Cross and also the Salvation Army.

'Gotham High' - The Batman cartoon that never was...

Here's an interesting premise. What if you took Batman and his friends and foes, and turned it into a high school drama for kids? Well you'd get something like what you see below... 'Gotham High' was one of many projects pitched to DC that was developed and then shelved. Whether this was a good or a bad idea depends on your sense of humor. To learn more about this project and see more images, go here.
