New 'Summer Wars' Trailer

Fans of 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time' will be interested in Director Hosada's and Madhouse Studio's next film 'Summer Wars' which has been generating a lot of buzz! The film touches upon themes of technology, particularly the internet, and how virtual reality can effect our present world with family drama and high school romance.

The Life Drawing book of the year is essentially sold out at the publisher. We just got the last block of books -and they came signed! They will be in the shop on Saturday - so if you wanted this one, now's the time to get it. Excellent book for anatomy buffs, people looking for info on construction and terrific writing. The drawings are great, but the explanations that go along with them is equally unique and exceptionally clear.

Waking Sleeping Beauty

A very interesting documentary will be releasing that details Walt Disney Studio's early struggles and work! I'm certain many of you will be interested in this one!

Kine in AQUA Illustrations 2003 - 2009

Those interested in the art of Sun Young Lee (Kine), the Korean Manhwa artist of Magical JxR, can grab a new artbook from their store. It is a softcover book with a Slipcover case. It has a gold leaf inlay and all the artwork is in full colour printed on A4 totaling 160 pages of quarter portraits, full page and double page spreads!

'Rapunzel' now 'Tangled'

As it turns out, Disney's upcoming 3-D animated adaptation of 'Rapunzel' is revealed to be getting a name change to 'Tangled' and more about the project was revealed stating that this wouldn't merely be an adaptation of the Rapunzel story and that there'll be a lot more to it than you'd expect. A new trailer for 'God of War III' released earlier! It teases us with some peeks at actual real-time gameplay showing off the high level of quality and innovative gameplay levels that are out of this world!

CG modellers will be interested in an informative blog post and video available here that details the creation process of one of the incredible enemy bosses that you can see in the trailer!
Also as an update to a previous post on 'The Last Airbender' movie, a longer trailer has now been made available here!

New Toy Story 3 trailer!

Disney and Pixar have released a long new trailer for the third (and probably final) installment of Toy Story! You can view it here in the quality of your choice! See if you can spot the Totoro! Fans of Disney and Pixar films can find plenty of artbooks for their various films as well as instructional animation books and software at our store, including the Art of Toy Story!

Teaser Trailer for 'The Borrowers'

Here's the first teaser trailer for Studio Ghibli's next big film 'The Borrowers', adapted from a novel by Mary Norton.The trailer shows a few scenes from the film and talks about and lets us hear the new theme song from the movie. The director for this new film is Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who was a key animator on Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo.

Guy Davis Art Show Preview NOW ON

The Labyrinth is excited to be hosting a preview of the Upcoming Art show by BPRD and Sandman Mystery Theatre artist Guy Davis. Stop by the shop to see ORIGINAL COMIC ART PAGES by this great artist. The full show and sale will be held at the Gladstone Hotel in downtown Toronto on Feb 27th, where Guy will also be doing a workshop.

Animation nominees for the Academy Awards

Not too long ago the nominees for the upcoming Academy Awards were announced. James Cameron's 'Avatar' is the biggest story of the year as it is now the highest grossing film of all time both worldwide and at the US domestic box-office! And it isn't slowing down anytime soon! James Cameron now owns the #1 and #2 spots with 'Avatar' and 'Titanic' by a huge margin!

It was a great year for amazing special effects films, and for animation in general. However, in the end there is only one true category for movies that are actually animated in frames by artists and not from state of the art motion and performance capture technology. This year saw films running the gamut from classical 2-D, to stop-motion, and 3-D animation! The nominees for the best animated feature length and short films this year are:

It's also another milestone to realise that Pixar's 'Up!' has also been nominated in the the Best Film category this year which has expanded to include 10 nominees. While this decision was made by the academy to include more audience favourite films in order to draw a larger television audience when the show airs, it is only the second animated film to ever be considered in this category since Disney's Beauty & The Beast!

While most of the other feature animated films alongside 'Up!' have been widely marketed, one may not be so well known as it hasn't been widely released in North America yet. That one is 'The Secret of Kells' which hails from Ireland! You can see the trailer here:
