The Digital Value Lab (Ryerson University) and the Japan Foundation, Toronto are pleased to present a seminar on anime and contemporary Japanese society. Two scholars—Prof. Jaqueline Berndt, Yokohama National University and Prof. Kaichiro Morikawa, Meiji University—have been invited from Japan to introduce the audience to Japanese society today through multi-disciplinary perspectives. At the conclusion of the seminar, Dr. Eric Cazdyn, Professor of Comparative Literature and East Asian Studies at University of Toronto will participate as the discussant.
POST-CRITICAL ANIME: Observations on its ‘Identities’ within Contemporary Japan
While anime is being watched on a global scale, there are significant differences in its contemporary reception. The gap between regular consumers and critical spectators, sometimes appearing in the form of Japanese audiences vs. foreign Japanologists, deserves special attention since it raises a number of questions, such as what sort of animated film is identified as ‘anime’; who relates anime to politics, history and society; what kind of meaning is at play in anime’s performative images, and to what extent one can read ‘Japanese society’, or even ‘culture’, out of anime. Comparing Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (1954) and Gonzo’s Samurai 7 (2004) as well as touching upon anime’s history, this lecture focuses on aesthetic and cultural identities ascribed to anime in modern Japan and their contemporary relevance.
Jaqueline Berndt is Associate Professor of Art and Media Studies, Yokohama National University. She specializes in aesthetics/art theory, visual cultural studies, Japanese studies, aesthetics of comics, art in modern Japan, anime and animation.
OTAKU CULTURE: Personality, Space and City of Anime Fans
In Japan, optimism about an ever-progressing technological future ran out in the 1970’s. It was in the mid-1980’s that the term otaku was coined to signify a new type of personality that emerged as a reaction to the loss of ‘future’. The term evokes a stereotyped image of a geeky computer nerd, long past adolescence but still obsessed with games and anime. The presentation shall explore how this otaku personality became a geographical phenomenon in a district called Akihabara, together with its role in the development of Japanese anime.
Kaichiro Morikawa is Associate Professor of Contemporary Culture in the School of Global Japanese Studies at Meiji University. His research interests include design and architectural theory. Prof. Morikawa served as commissioner of the Japanese pavilion at the Venice Biennale 9th International Architecture Exhibition in 2004.

Totoro Forest Project - bitter sweet
Just found out today that Insight Editions, the guys behind the art of open season, and art of kung fu panda will be publishing the Totoro forest project book for the masses - wait for it..
in December 2009. yeah -its a long time to wait. Still, its great news for anyone that missed the gallery edition. Something to look forward to next Christmas!

NEW: Amid Amidi's Pixar Shorts and Animal Design Zoo
New from Amid Amidi (Cartoon Brew): the art of Pixar short films.
As many of you know, Pixar developed a lot of their technology and had a ton of break-throughs using the shorts format. films like Knick Knack, For the Birds and Gerry's Game are classics. Now finally, there's a book that looks at them all. In Store right now.
In The Daily Zoo, Chris Ayers creates visual feast of animal character designs. This is the kind of book that could appeal to the general book lover and be viewed on as a humour book, or it can be seen as a great reference book for style and design.
This is a great companion to David Coleman's Art of Animal Character Design, in terms of being a source of terrific animal drawings. The Daily Zoo is published by Design Studio Press, the same guys behind Skillful Huntsmen, Quantumscapes and Carlos Huante's Monstruo.

Waltz with Bashir, Beanworld,Atomic Robo, TinTin in Congo
Next Wednesday (Feb 25) isn't a huge week in terms of numbers of new titles -but there are some very cool items coming to say the least.
First off - Tintin in the Congo English facsimile edition. Little Brown, which publishes the English language Tintin books won't print this book due to the way African people are depicted in it. As a result, up to now, we have only had the French edition in stock. Now, after a hiatus, Last Gasp has put out a new edition of the Facsimile edition which is presented in the original black and white.
If you're wondering what is a Facsimile edition -its a reprint of the original Tintin material, before it was re-drawn and recoloured. Originally Herge drew Tintin in black and white, but after it grew in popularity, he hired a team to help colour the book as well as make some changes to the book. The changes include some new backgrounds as well as changes in dialogue.
For those that want to read it, but don't read French, now you can.
Waltz with Bashir won a number of awards - as an independent animated film. Now comes the Graphic novel by the same creators. Definately worth a look.
The next item is Larry Marder's Beanworld. This series has been out of print for a number of years, and as a huge fan, I can't express just how excited I am to see it available again. The art is simple, but the story is quirky and the characterization a lot of fun. If you're tired of the usual, you will find Beanworld highly refreshing.
Atomic Robo was last years indy hit, and now volume 2 of this story is finally collected. Fans of Hellboy should definately check this out.
Dave McKean of Sandman fame, has 2 new items out this week. An artbook of Ink drawings and a postcard book (not shown).
The Amazing Jim Mahfood gets the Sparrow treatment.
Ashely Wood's Popbot #8.
MPD Psycho 8 - try this series if you love horror. 1-7 in stock.

NEW SIMPSONS OPENING - 20 YEARS IN THE MAKING
Apparently, after 20 years with the same opening (not including minor adjustments -like Bart's writing on the board, or the couch scene) - the Opening for the Simpsons has been pretty much the same. Now, in time for HD, the show has a new opening. almost 2 million views in less than 4 days!
