SKETCHBOOKS: RAMOS, COFFEE, SEILER, FURLONG, BETTEO, SILVER
Tons of Great Sketchbooks arrived today just in time for the weekend. This weekend of course -is Fan Expo here in Toronto. Fan expo is a huge event featuring Anime, Comics, Sci-Fi, Horror, Gaming,etc..
For us - it's a chance to see out of town guests. Some of the fine folks that we hope to see include: Jason Seiler, J Scott Campbell, Alberto Ruiz, Justin Ridge, Hye-Jung Kim, Stephen Silver, Justin Coffee, Matt Stewart, Robin Mitchell, Adam Hughes and a bunch more -that my tired brain can't think of at this late moment.
In preparing to post about the new sketchbooks, I found this shot of Humberto Ramos drawing at Comic Con San Diego. I believe if you click on the image, you can enlarge it to see exactly what he's doing. FYI: He didn't know I took the picture -so it wasn't posed. This is really how he holds a pencil. His Sketchbook Fairy Quest is in stock now by the way, and it really kicks butt. Highest recommendation!

Jason Seiler, one of the geniuses of Caricature has a sketchbook out via Imaginism studios. This is the first book they put out that doesnt fit their mold. Dare I say Jason is the next Krugger? Not sure how he would react to that comparison. Their styles are different -but they are both very cool in their own way. Did I mention this book is limited to just 1000 copies and that Jason is in town to sign? If you get to meet him, you will learn to love him.
on a side note: I was excited to see the announcement in the back saying the next book from Imaginism will be Pet Monsters! .
Justin Coffee Sketchbook : Cream and Sugar. Definately worth it - especially if you like cheescake. Fans of Bill Presing will especially appreciate this book as it has a similar sensiblity. When I asked Bill Presing about Justin's work, he had nothing but praise. We like it too. See it for yourself and make up your own mind.
Stephen Silver, the man I credit as being the first to set the bar for what a sketchbook can and should be with his book Art of Silver, has a new book called Life. Its great - and really worth while. Fyi: the Art of Silver is currently out of print, but Stephen has assured us a new printing with possibly extra pages will be coming in the new year (hopefully by February or March).

The white book is full of colour illustrations and the black book is mostly pencils. Both are full of some of the greatest layouts we have ever seen. If you are interested in Layout - you must see these books before they are gone!

NEW ART OF STAR WARS FORCE UNLEASHED
In store on Tuesday the 19th. Its a great new artbook based on the video game. If you like Star Wars, you got to check this one out.
RIP Carlos Meglia
I am a day behind, but I just learned the sad news that one of my all time favourite artists just passed away.
Carlos Meglia is most famous for his creation of Cyber Six- which was turned into a super cool animated series. The argentinian artist, also worked on several superman projects including Superman Infinite Series and Superman/Tarzan.
His most recent series Canari, from the french publisher Soleil is just incredible. His work has influenced many other artists -including two other Labyrinth favourites: Humberto Ramos and Francisco Herrera. In fact, Herrera had mentioned that the three of them, were supposed to work on an upcoming Skydoll book together. It would have been the dream team for me. Now, I can only imagine.

not sure how long this site will remain, as it looks like it was run by him (I can't read the spanish -so I am not positive.) Still, worth looking at as soon as you can.
Below is an image from Monster World. This was a miniseries from DC comics about a group of 3 year olds sent to outer space -with the idea that they would age slowly during the long space travel period. but something goes wrong, and the ship crash lands on a planet covered by monsters - when the astronaughts are only 7 year old kids. Too bad its never been collected into a trade. If you can find these as comics, you will be doing yourself a favour.

CREATURE BOX SKETCHBOOK IN STOCK NOW!
The Creature Box sketchbook with DVD is a really cool item we got in San Diego. The DVD shows time lapse character design. Basically you see the characters being created using a super secret time lapse technology designed by NASA. or not. Still - It's really unique and it's all very affordable.

Will Eisner Expressive Anatomy. The father of the gaphic novel and the man who's name is behind the comic industry's most prestigous awards - is behind this new How To Book. Sadly, Will passed away a couple of years back so it will be interesting to see the book. His other how to book; Comics and Sequential Art is a must have for anyone interested in working as an illustrator in comics.
OK -ITS NOT NEW - BUT ITS BEEN HARD TO GET A HOLD OF LATELY. NOT ANY MORE. More copies are arriving Wednesday. If you have a copy, maybe you should be thinking about getting another copy for a friend. If you don't have a copy - why not?

OH WHAT BEAUTIFUL ANIME EYES YOU HAVE
One of our favourite sites is Pw the Beat. This week, we learned about the Big Eye fashion industry in Japan. We Sell a book called Big Eye Art -but we really had no idea people were actually altering the look/size of their eyes to match the anime style.
